Implementing the Policy

Implementing the University's Occupational Stress Policy

How is this being carried out?

Mandatory training for Managers, Heads of Department and Section in Managing Occupational Stress.  This is undertaken by Wendy Jones, University Occupational Health Adviser, with Mary Thomas, Personnel Adviser.

Managers, and Heads of Department or Section are then required:

  • to identify key factors* which have the potential to affect the well-being of their staff and to plan ways to manage these risks.  Heads of Department/Section are being encouraged to feed their concerns on these upwards to enable a risk assessment to be done at a higher level with the support of senior management.
  • to arrange for a briefing of all staff with managerial and supervisory responsibilities in their Department or Section by the Occupational Health Adviser.  At these, individual copies of the Occupational Stress policy will be distributed.

Once briefed, these managerial/supervisory staff are then expected to ensure that all employees for whom they are responsible are briefed, and that each receives a copy of relevant documentation.

* Since a survey of all employees was carried out in October/November 2005 the Occupational Health Adviser, together with HR Adviser s, have been meeting Heads over the past year to provide them with data to assist them in this.  Another audit is proposed in late 2007 or early 2008.
