Code of Practice on the Composition of Appointment Committees for Posts Attracting Academic and Related Conditions of Service
This document sets out the required composition for Appointments Committees for the different staff groups that attract academic and related conditions of service. These rules apply to all vacancies, both of a fixed term and of an open ended nature.
The composition of all Appointments Committees must be approved by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor prior to the interviews taking place. Variations to the compositions set out below may only be agreed in advance by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor. A maximum of two extra members of staff may be co-opted to the Appointment Committee to assist it in the performance of its duties, with the prior agreement of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor.
Research and Teaching Job Family
Professor
Each appointment of a Professor shall be made by a Joint Committee of the Council and the Senate appointed for that purpose in accordance with Statute XIII.8(i) or a quorum thereof. The Joint Committee shall consist of the following members:
• Vice-Chancellor or Deputy Vice-Chancellor(Chair)
• Relevant Dean
• Relevant Head of Department
• Deputy Vice-Chancellor and/or Pro Vice-Chancellor (R)
• One Professorial member of Senate
• Director of Human Resources
• At least two but not more than three assessors (only one of whom may be a member of the University)
Reader
Each appointment of a Reader shall be made by a Joint Committee of the Council and the Senate appointed for that purpose in accordance with Statute XIII.8(i) or a quorum thereof. The Joint Committee shall consist of the following members:
• Relevant Dean
• Relevant Head of Department
• A Professor or Reader from within the Department
• A Professor or Reader from outside the Department
• At least one external assessor who may advise in the selection of candidates for interview and who shall be invited to take part in the interviewing of candidate.
Lecturer and Senior Lecturer
Each appointment of a Lecturer/ Senior Lecturer shall be made by a Joint Committee of the Council and the Senate appointed for that purpose in accordance with Statute XIII.8(i) or a quorum thereof. The Joint Committee shall consist of the following members:
• Relevant Dean or Pro Vice-Chancellor (Chair)
• Relevant Head of Department or nominee
• One member of Academic staff from within the Department (excluding Research Fellow or Senior Research Fellow)*
• One member of Academic Staff from outside the Department (excluding Research Fellow or Senior Research Fellow)*
*A Lecturer is not permitted to be a member of an Appointments Committee for a Senior Lecturer.
Research Job Family
Research Fellow and Senior Research Fellow
Each appointment of a Research Fellow/Senior Research Fellow shall be made by a Joint Committee of the Council and the Senate appointed for that purpose in accordance with Statute XIII.8(i) or a quorum thereof. The Joint Committee shall consist of the following members:
• Relevant Dean or Pro Vice-Chancellor (Chair)
• Relevant Head of Department
• One member of Academic staff from within the Department*
• One member of Academic staff from outside the Department*
*A Lecturer or Research Fellow is not permitted to be a member of an Appointments Committee for a Senior Research Fellow.
Management and Specialist Job Family
Each appointment of a member of the Management and Specialist Job Family shall be made by a Joint Committee of the Council and the Senate appointed for that purpose in accordance with Statute XIII.8(i) or a quorum thereof. The Joint Committee shall consist of the following members:
• Senior Executive Manager or their nominee (Chair)
• Relevant Head of Department
Either
• One member of Academic staff
• One member of the Management and Specialist Job Family of at least the same grade as the post being filled
Or
• Two members of the Management and Specialist Job Family of at least the same grade as the post being filled
For grade 9 Management and Specialist positions, the Joint Committee shall also consist of:
• Deputy Vice-Chancellor
• Director of Human Resources
Teaching and Scholarship Job Family
Each appointment of a member of the Teaching and Scholarship Job Family shall be made by a Joint Committee of the Council and the Senate appointed for that purpose in accordance with Statute XIII.8(i) or a quorum thereof. The Joint Committee shall consist of the following members:
• Relevant Dean or Pro-Vice Chancellor (Teaching)
• Relevant Head of Department
• One member of Academic staff of
• One member of the Teaching and Scholarship Job Family or a member of Academic staff from outside the Department
Exemptions
The following staff who attract Academic and Related Conditions of Service are not subject to the above regulations. Departments are able to convene Appointments Committees appropriate for the vacancy in question. Good practice must always be followed and further guidance can be found in the University’s Good Recruitment Guide.
Research Job Family (except Research Fellows and Senior Research Fellows)
Staff on grade 6 of the Technical Services Job Family
Temporary posts of a very limited duration, as determined by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor
