9. Good Recruitment Practice
Since 1 August 1997, ALL advertising must be placed via the University's appointed agency, Euro RSCG Riley.
Departments and sections should contact Human Resources to place their advertisement.
If required, departments can contact Euro RSCG Riley for free advice on which publication(s) may be most appropriate for the post in question.
Information on sizes, wordcounts, costs, copy deadlines, etc. to assist departments in planning is available from your HR Officer or Riley's.
Wherever possible staff recruitment will be composite unless specified to be placed as a solo advert by Human Resources.
A courtesy copy of the advertisement together with confirmation of costs and insertion date(s) will be provided to departments.
When placing a staff recruitment advertisement, you will need to supply information to Human Resources in respect of the advertisement itself:
Please complete the Advertising Request Form
Human Resources has expertise in all aspects of recruitment and selection and your Faculty HR Adviser (see who we are and what we do) will be happy to provide further guidance and to answer queries.
In January 1998 jobs.ac.uk, a site for academic and related vacancies, was launched by the Universities Advertising Group (UAG) (a purchasing consortium of 37 UK Universities). As the popularity and availability of the internet grows the site will offer a powerful and much cheaper alternative to traditional press advertising. The cost for this service is currently free to UAG members ( reviewed annually).
Hypertext links to the University or Departmental web pages can be included in advertisements.
All recruitment advertising is placed on Jobs.ac.uk for approximately four weeks or to the closing date, whichever is latest.
For queries regarding jobs.ac.uk contact Human Resources .
Please note that jobs.ac.uk will only accept adverts processed via HR and Design and Print Services. Do not attempt to send your advert direct to Jobs.ac.uk.
All staff recruitment advertisements have a unique reference number in the following format:
AU/10/1200
showing the departmental code, followed by the vacancy number, followed by the unique advertisement number.
This sequence is not only useful for administrative purposes both in HR and in Design and Print Services, but is also potentially very useful to departments/sections in that it will allow departments to monitor the effectiveness of their adverts by undertaking a response analysis.
For example, the same post advertised in, say, the Loughborough Echo, Leicester Mercury and the Nottingham Evening Post would be allocated three reference numbers:
AU/10/1200 - Loughborough Echo
AU/10/1201 - Leicester Mercury
AU/10/1202 - Nottingham Evening Post
The department can therefore monitor the adverts to discover which:a) generates the most enquiries
- b) generates the most applications
- c) generates the best quality applicants
- d) offers the best value for money
Unique reference numbers (with a slightly different format) will also be used for all other forms of advertising.
